Lake Natron
Lake Natron lies in the Rift Valley near Ol Doinyo Lengai and is known for stark volcanic scenery, Maasai communities and an alkaline lake environment important to lesser flamingos.
The area is remote compared with the main northern safari circuit. Roads can be rough, so travel time should be treated realistically. The landscape, village setting and walking activities are often as important as conventional wildlife viewing.
Planning a Visit
Ol Doinyo Lengai climbs are commonly started at night because daytime heat on the exposed slopes can be intense. The ascent is steep and physically demanding. Current volcanic and trail conditions must be checked locally before any climb.
Lake Natron can connect northern Serengeti with the Arusha side on longer itineraries, but it should not be inserted into a short safari simply to add another destination.
